What are you willing to give up for your loved ones?

It's not easy to juggle work, studies and mommy duties at the same time.

Sometimes you need to choose and make a sacrifice.

And that's what Beverly did.

There were times na nakakatulog na siya during classes kasi she worked on a graveyard shift.

Most of the time, she preferred missing her classes to take care of her and her baby's health.

Worst is, she sacrificed her studies and her job because of her pregnancies.

Nag-stop siya.

"I believe study will always be there, but all the expenses we needed for my CS delivery, the stuff that needed to be ready prior to my delivery need to be prioritized."

Health scare also pushed her to stop working and pursue freelancing.

Was she able to finish her studies?

Were all her sacrifices worth it?

Kaya bang mag-work from home kahit maraming inaalagaang bata?

Let's find out tomorrow from our JasSuccess guest Beverly.

A 25-year-old mom who juggled work, studies and mommy duties to become a successful freelancer.

You'd be inspired by her story.  Watch the replay here.

Introduction

Watch this video as Beverly narrates her own freelancing journey.

Find out how she went from being a mom who aside from being pregnant and having a one-year-old baby, was also studying in college by morning and call-center agent by night. She discovered VA Bootcamp and learned only the free course. She studied and worked hard and eventually reached her goal. She is now a Freelance Entrepreneur who hires other VAs for her agency.

Notable Quotes

  • Kailangan mo talaga ng time and effort kung gusto mo talagang matuto.

Journey to Freelancing

  • She first heard about call-center agents who work from home and searched customer service jobs online when she was pregnant with her second child. Aside from being a young mom, she was also trying to finish her studies at the same time.
  • She tried to be an online tutor but since her environment was not conducive to teaching, she resigned after 3 days.
  • She searched again this time in onlinejobs.ph and got hired as customer service for USD 2 per hour despite challenges with her faulty laptop.
  • She bounced back and forth from being a home-based freelancer to being call center agent to home-based again.
  • She found the Virtual Assistant Bootcamp on Facebook, got inspired by the "Road to 100k" and took the free course. She studied and got help from Ms. Anna on her Upwork profile to be approved. She immediately got invited to interview and work hard to work with multiple clients.
  • She learned several skills from Social Media Marketing to Website Design to SEO to Ecommerce.
  • She started to outsource when someone she knows asked her to find a client.
  • Beverly has now her own freelance agency, an ecommerce store, ebay stores and a new US business venture, www.BirkenSlidesUSA.com with free shipping to US, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and Germany.
  • She also has local business here in the Philippines, RA Divi Supplies Trading which you can find on Facebook and DMRZ Errand Service business in Tarlac which has now reached Angeles and Mabalacat in Pampanga.
  • She is still planning multiple businesses and projects in the future.

Question and Answer

How did you find VA Bootcamp?

Nahanap ko sa Facebook. Di ako nagstick sa isang skill lang. Nag-explore ako then naghanap ako ng mga work sa graphic design, web design. Tiningnan ko yung mga available na courses. Nakita ko sa Facebook yung VA Bootcamp. That time di ko pa afford yung magbayad sa course.

What is your biggest WHY?

Gusto kong makatapos. Iba kase pag nakatapos ka. Di nila makukuha yung knowledge mo na natutunan mo from school.

What encourages you to stick to freelancing?

No hassle.

WHAT MOTIVATED ME TO PURSUE FREELANCING?

What motivated me to pursue freelancing was my kids, family, and eagerness to finish my study. I had to stop few times because of 3 consecutive pregnancies. I gave birth to my first child, at the age of 18, that was 2013. I had to stop for one semester, then I studied again for 1 year, until I had to stop again because I got pregnant to my second child. When I got pregnant to the second, I was still studying that time, I decided to apply in Sutherland and be a working student because I needed to have income to save enough money for my Ceasarean delivery ‘cause I don’t want to depend all the expenses to others, to my family, partner, and his family. So when I was accepted to the job. I worked in a graveyard shift, working at night or midnight until morning. It was really tough because we were on Finals in school that time, so it was really a pressure to me to work at night and study at day time while I was pregnant. So result was I attended classes too rarely, because I was sleeping at day time. I preferred to miss classes and just work hard with examinations.
I was glad that I still made it to the finals even my attendance can be counted on my fingers, I just gave my best in quizzes & examinations. Finals is 40% of our whole semester grade, so I needed to work best on final examinations to all the subjects I had to compensate those missed attendances, quizzes & graded activities including the final project. So I chose to stop & just work. Because I believe study will always be there, but all the expenses we needed for my CS delivery, the stuff that needed to be ready prior to my delivery need to be prioritized. So I gave up study, even I badly wanted to finish my study immediately that time so I can just work full time to sustain the needs of my family & kids. So yes, I stopped then I continued working at Sutherland, until I decided to stop from the job because I felt like I can’t do it anymore, my delivery will come soon, and working at night while my eldest son & my partner were sleeping is not good for me, then when I got home, my partner is already in his office, working. I never had enough time to bond with them, and it was not good for me. We just go to the mall every day off, we eat, and let our son play, that’s the only bonding we have. Because I needed to sleep after my shift during working days, then my son usually lay down beside me, and he will put his feet on my legs before I sleep until I fall asleep, then when I woke up, I will just eat, then my partner will bring me to Sutherland again. I told myself that I won’t let that to happen forever. So I deciced to start looking for jobs online. I just work for few months until before I gave birth because my very first client put his store in vacation that time. He had to go to his home town and travelled from different countries. (But he still hire me till now whenever he needs any of my service). So I was in a no work no pay situation again until I gave birth to my second child.

But after giving birth, I needed to work again since we already have two kids, my eldest was just 2 years old that time. The company even asked me to get a medical exam proving that I was already physically fit because I just gave birth to my second son that time, that was just more than 2 months ago. Then when I was accepted the 2nd time around, I worked for only 3 months under Amazon account.

Then I decided to go back in school again, but guess what happened next? I got pregnant to my 3d child again, to my daughter who is 3 years old now. Same thing happened to my study because I decided to work again to have enough money as a preparation for my next CS delivery. I worked in Sitel that time because I heard they offer better salaries, & better health benefits there. But yes, as mentioned, very same things happened to my study, but I did not intend to miss class that time, I chose not to go to my 3 hour laboratory classes in the morning because my shift or my training in Sitel was until 1 or 2pm in the afternoon, I go to school to attend class after my training, but because I don’t have enough sleep yet, because my shift was too early, my eyes were always closing while my Accounting Professor was teaching. I always feel like falling asleep. But I still continued working until I started to have nose bleeds, when I started to be in a graveyard shift or night shift on the first week of December. So I decided to take a rest, my Team Leader was kind, and because he was worried about me too he allowed me to have a few days leave, because I was always in the clinic, not feeling well, wanted to sleep, rest, and not to take calls anymore. I always go under time! I go home even my shift did not end yet. I was glad that the account Staples Advantage U.S. I’m in was allowing undertimes that time. I did some research regarding nosebleeding when pregnant and it seems to be normal to have nose bleed during pregnancy, but of course, nothing is normal for me when I see blood! That nose bleeding won’t happen if there was no problem with my health. And I won’t let anything happen to my child so I gave up the work, my few days leave became weeks ‘cause I decided not to go to work anymore until I filed a resignation before New Year.

That was the time that I decided to just pursue freelancing or working from home. I was luck to have my 2nd client

If not because of my kids, maybe I was not where I am today.

  3. Meron ako di nasagot dito ng maayos nung tinanong na how did I handle stress kasi pahinto hinto nga ako dahil may family na and ang dami kong gustong gawin sa buhay.

Well, I handled stress with patience lang and with faith in God. Positive lang talaga ako palagi I let God do what he wants to do and patient lang ako sa mga plans niya in my life. Never ako sumuko. Never ko sinabi na di ko kaya. I always say na "kayo na po bahala," and positive lang talaga. Iniisip ko lang na mangyayari then it will happen. Never ako nag isip ng negative
