You've probably heard of the Kurot principle, made famous by Bo Sanchez

It outlines the difference between a Filipino businessman and a Chinese businessman.

How that when a Filipino businessman sees their first signs of profit, they spend it on things that they've always wanted to buy - a new cellphone, a new car, a new house, and so on.

The Chinese businessman, on the other hand, puts the profit back into the business and lives as if they haven't earned anything yet. They have the same cellphone, the same old car (or no car at all!), and even the same white sando and slippers we always see Chinese businessmen wear.

When the business faces down times (as all businesses have ups and down), the Chinese business has that cash reserve to survive and help them until they face the up times again.

The Filipino businessman, on the other hand, doesn't have that cash reserve. They either have to close their business or sell that new car, that new house (and lose money in the sale) in order to save their business.

I firmly believe that the real rich just wear tshirts and not barongs

By real rich, I mean people who have worked hard to be rich - not those who became rich because of privilege or luck. Becoming rich takes lots of hard work and discipline. It takes being able to sacrifice in the short term in order to be rewarded in the long term.

To not buy that new car today in order to save for retirement
To not eating that pork chop in order to live longer
To not flirting with that sexy coworker to keep a happy marriage
To not buying new clothes and just using the ones you have

In order to become rich and stay rich, you have to practice discipline in your life. Not just in money, but in every aspect of your life. Being able to sacrifice, being disciplined, planning for the future, and being content with what you have are what make, and keep, the rich - rich. The real rich.

It's not about the money you make. Ever notice how poor lotto winners end up losing all their money and just become poor again?

It's because they didn't work hard to be rich. They didn't learn to sacrifice, learn discipline, learn to plan for the future, and learn to be content with what they have.

If you earn a lot of money without learning these things. You might be rich for a time. But until you learn discipline, sacrifice, planning, and contentment - you won't stay rich.
