Merideth’s Journey to Freelancing

  • After graduating from high school, she told her parents she’d go to Manila and work so she could continue her studies. She headed to city with only 500 pesos and her dream to work and study.
  • She worked as a baby sitter for three months. After that, worked at her Tita’s canteen and then she tried her luck at PLDT. With the help of her Tita, she got hired as a sales agent at the age of 17. It was commission-based.
  • She studied in the morning and worked as a sales agent in the afternoon.
  • She took a two-year course. After graduating, she realized that she wanted to have a job where she can earn a minimum salary.
  • In 2011, she applied to one of her PLDT customers who has an online business selling products on eBay and was luckily hired.
  • She did simple tasks, at first. Then she learned the process. Soon after, she already managed her employer’s online store.
  • Her priorities and struggles came after she gave birth to her first baby.
  • She had to let her mother take the baby to the province so she could continue working and still support her family. That was a tough episode.
  • She also thought of working abroad to earn more.
  • In 2016, she went back to PLDT. She still had struggles like problems with the babysitters since she already got her child back.
  • It resulted a change in their child's behavior and that triggered her husband to talk to her, convinced her to do offline business and offered a startup capital.
  • At first, it’s ok. But in January 2018, she felt bored at home. That time her child goes to school from morning ‘til noon.
  • Her husband recommended her to check me out ~Jason Dulay.
  • She researched about me and found out about the free course.
  • She signed up and consumed all the free courses. She received an e-mail about change in the annual membership subscription so she told her husband she'd enroll and avail the cheapest course. But her husband pushed her to take the complete package.
  • She finished the course in a week. She saw success stories of people who joined the Hustle Challenge. So she joined the next Hustle Challenge in October. She learned the right way of making cover letters and how to deal with interviews. Luckily, she got her first client.
  • She focused on her E-commerce niche and now has 3 clients.
  • With that, she is now earning three times more compared to what she was earning before in the office.
  • Now, she is happily working as an E-commerce Specialist and is planning to explore other niches to expand her skills and take freelancing up another notch.

Q&A Highlights

So ano yung mga natutunan mo doon? Saan ka nahirapan?

Actually nahirapan ako sa mga assignment po. Natapos ko yung bootcamp ng hindi ko ginagawa yung assignment. Kaya nung natapos ko siya parang na-mroblema ako kung paano ako mag-a-apply. Kasi dun nga sa Upwork, kailangan ng portfolio. Nagmadali akong tapusin tapos wala pala akong mga assignments.

Ano daw yung Hustle Challenge? Explain mo daw.

Pag sumali kayo ng Hustle Challenge, mag-a-aply kayo everyday sa mga job applications and then yung proposal i-screenshot niyo and then yung job post i-screenshot niyo din and then pinapasa namin sa mga mentors para ma-check kung tama ba yung mga pinagsasabi namin.

How would you compare yung day to day life mo nung nag-wo-work ka pa sa office compared sa ngayon?

Nung time na nag-wo-work pa kasi ako, siyempre yung pag-a-alala ko diba, kasi mamaya sinasaktan nung yaya yung anak ko. Yung mga worry na ganun. Parang hindi ka din makakapag-trabaho ng maayos. Ngayon, yun yung hindi ko na iniisip kasi nagwowork na ako dito sa bahay tapos kasama ko pa yung anak ko tsaka hindi na ako mag-babayad ng yaya. Nung nagta-trabaho ako, ako yung nagbabayad sa yaya since ako nga yung may gusto mag-trabaho. So isa din yun sa sobrang laking tinipid namin. Kasi hindi ko na din kailangan ma-masahe, traffic.

Yung mga ‘di mo ba pinansin na interview ng clients nagkakaroon ng bad feedback sa applicant?

Hindi naman po. Yun dun po sa stats, dun lang po mag-kakaroon ng ano.

Ano daw ang rate mo now?

$7. Kasi ‘yun yung sabi ni Jason, huwag bababa sa 5.

One at a time ba ang pag-trabaho mo sa client o sabay mo nang ginagawa?

Hindi po. Yung isang client ko kasi may specific time na kailangan mag-online ako. Yung isa kahit anong oras kasi yung deadline namin is one week eh. Per week kasi kami sa UpWork. Fixed price siya.

So paano naman ang time management ‘pag marami kang clients?

Nagkaroon ako ng full time client bago mag 2019, kaya lang sobrang time consuming. Gusto ko yung fixed price na pwede ko siyang gawing ganitong oras na kumbaga hawak ko yung oras ko.

Hindi ka ba nag-try ng ibang niche?

Opo. E-commerce lang talaga yung in-a-apply-an ko.

Kung lahat ba ng natutunan mo sa VA Bootcamp? Alin daw dun yung pinaka naging useful sa’yo?

Actually yung mga tinuturo doon, sobrang laking tulong din yun. Tinuturo din dun kung paano ka humarap sa client, paano ka sumagot, paano ka mag-apply. Tinuturo din dun yung basic skills na kailangan mo as virtual assistant.  So sobrang dami niyo talagang matututunan. Tsaka yung ibang skills naman, hindi ko naman din alam. So dun ko lang din nalaman sa VA Bootcamp.

Ano po ba ang other possible niches ng pagiging online worker?

Madami talagang niches. We suggest na mag-start ka as a Virtual Assistant katulad ng tinuturo namin sa VA Bootcamp kasi doon ma-e-experience mo ang ibat-ibang line unti-unti then dun mo ma-di-discover ang niche na gusto mo.

How do you end a contract with your client lalo na kapag ayaw mo na siya?

Kailangan maging honest ka lang sa kanya kasi maapektuhan din yung feedback sa’yo nun kung halimbawa ‘di mo na bet tapos ayaw mo na rin mag work. So ano lang ~ communication. Meron tayong FLIP Chat & Chill about this yung “How to breakup with your Client”.

Sa bootcamp po ba lahat ng niche na pwede sa freelancing tina-tackle? Di po ba meron kayong individual courses na parang specialty na po ba yun?

Nasa complete course na siya at hindi mo na ma-pu-purchase ng separate so you have to enroll sa complete course para ma-a-vail mo lahat ng mga special courses like Bookkeeping, SEO, Better English, FB Ads, Social Media at tsaka Next Level Freelancing.

Ano bang ma-a-advise mo sa mga mommy na katulad mo at sa mga nag-o-office job?

‘Yun po sa mga katulad ko na gustong mag-work from home at makaiwas na sa napaka-habang traffic. Kasi maraming nagsasabi kung paano mag-apply, try niyo po sa mga courses tulad yung VA Bootcamp. Sobrang laking tulong po lalo na yung may mentor ka.

Kailan si hubby magwowork from home?

Actually po yung isang task ko pinapagawa ko na.

  99. HOW TO JOIN IN PAYSBOOK

    Step 1- Register sa Paysbook. Upon registartion, 300 will be credited sa dashboard mo. Registration palang may kita kana.
