Nothing happens by chance.

Do you agree?

Every event has meaning.

And if we look carefully it will tell us a story.

The thoughts that come to mind, the people we meet, the events that unfold can give us a good idea of where we are and how to move forward.

Meet Ellea.

She used to work in the garment industry.

Who would have thought that browsing on her social media account would lead her to freedom?

You see, before she rendered her resignation way back in 2017, she was looking for another source of income.

And she came upon stories of freelancing and free information which got her interested to try.

Fast forward today...

She’s able to 4x her income...thanks to freelancing.

And on this replay, she’ll share with us her story — her strength, perseverance, and wins.

  1. Introduction

A corporate employee for 12 years earning on a monthly basis, resigned, now earns weekly at the comfort of her home while doing mommy duties. Read on and unravel Ms. Ellea’s STRUGGLE, STRATEGY, and her SUCCESS as a freelancer.

  1. Notable Quotes
  • Ang naging challenge ko lang dun is yung fear to go out my comfort zone.
  • Nakatulong sa akin yung Courses natin, parang hand to mouth, parang may nagtutor talaga sayo.
  • Meron akong checklist the pros and cons, so mas marami yung pros dito sa freelancing.
  • Sa freelancing you are your own boss, boss ka ng sarili mong oras.
  • Wala talagang time management, it is activity management.
  • Be realistic and at the same time ready to accept the challenge.
  • Yung tool mo ay yung gustong gawin sa buhay mo, it's your dream. Your goal. Your fuel. Your motivation!.

III. Journey to Freelancing

  • An accountant for a corporate company with 12 years of experience
  • Reasons she quit her job;
    • Promotion is slow. It's either the boss resigns or retires before you can step up the ladder.
    • Compensation does not equal the actual workload and time spent for the company.
    • More hours spent in the company means less time for my family. The time spent on commuting and the effort of waking up early for work and extending working hours because of due dates equals going home late and family time is a myth.
  • Started to learn about freelancing through a TV program, which features a freelancer mom, which triggers her curiosity. Browsing through facebook to learn more and found VABootcamp.
  • Did put up a small business but was not effective since she still had a corporate job.
  • By the time she decided to quit her job, she was already enrolled in VABootcamp but was not even finished yet with the course.
  • With so much free time at hand, she eventually finished the course with the help of her mentor/s  who assisted her during the training and the VA group, hand in hand as a support system for overcoming challenges and difficulties for new freelancers like herself.
  • Landed her dream contract as a Assistant Unit Manager in PRUlife UK where she can fulfil her mommy duties and have a job at the comfort of her home, earning on a weekly basis.
  1. Question and Answer

How busy are you normally?

Meron akong activity calendar and target activities during the day na pag nagawa ko na, I'm free the rest of the day.

How did you get that kind of contract?

Pagdating sa career mo Ellea, do you think this has been easy for you?

Alam kong parang hindi magiging madali kasi syempre nasa corporate job ako for 12 years.

During the boot camp, were you briefed na paghandaan mo kasi mahirap ito? Were you briefed that way?

How about you talk about your story Ms. Ellea?

Way back 2017, nandun ako sa crisis nag-iisip na magtatagal ba ako sa corporate o magbu-business; ito ang two option ko at that time. Dahil mother ako of two, ako din yung breadwinner, parang ang hirap sa akin to decide. Although mabagal ang growth sa company at iniisip mo papalitan or mapro-promote ka pag nawala ang mga boss, sa corporate ang tagal mangyari, its either lumipat sila ng company or magretire sila so kailan pa? What to do with my life? Kung may mga promotion man, yung compensation niya is not equivalent sa amount ng trabaho na meron ka. Takot na sumubok ang naging hindrance ko to decide during that time. Ayoko naman mawala bigla yung income kasi unfair for my children.

Ellea could talk to us about your journey once you entered freelancing?

Bago ako mag-enroll, isa sa problem ay wala akong laptop where I can study and practice. Nang bumili ako, i don't know how start. So during that time I'm aware papasok ako sa freelancing, I need help. Ang naging challenge ko is fear to go out my comfort zone. Nung nagfreelancing na ako way back in 2017, hindi pa ako tapos ng course, nag-resign na ako without hesitation. Meron akong checklist, the pros and cons so mas marami ang pros dito sa freelancing. Wala akong natanggap for 12 years na nasa corporate ako. Sa freelancing you are your own boss, boss ka ng sarili mong oras. Doon ako nagkaroon ng problema. Kasi nag-enjoy ako ng ilang months, tanghali gumising, sinusundo mo yung anak mo, at nagtu-tutor.  That is the challenge kaya nabuo ko ang goal-setting.

How are you able to overcome the challenge pag nag-transition ka na agad agad from corporate to freelancing?

And kagandahan nito yung rejection, halimbawa may naging client ako, gumawa ako ng project outside Upwork which was the biggest mistake, hindi ako nabayaran.

Ano po yun naging pinaka challenge mo when it comes to time management?

Actually, it is activity management. You have to rate ano ba ang most important, pwedeng gawin bukas. Di ba kaya you have to ask yourself, ano ba ang gusto kong tutukan na niche? diba? Try to assess yourself. I-rate mo ngayong araw na ito, ito ang aaraling ko pero dapat ko ma-apply siya on the following weeks. I-categorize mo. Tapos after nun, i-rate mo yun activities mo.

What advice can you give when it comes to getting equipment for the first time?

Nakita mo na hindi siya effective, waste of time so nag invest talaga ako. Talagang brand new kasi, yung pagpapagawa,  waste of time ang mabagal na computer, mas mahal kesa i-invest mo sa new laptop.

Any advice to those who are getting overwhelm sa dami ng gusto nilang pag-aralan?

Assess: san ba ang niche ko? Saan ba ako magaling? Ano madali sa akin?. Number 1, Kung gusto mo talaga siyang gawin?

"Yung tool ay yung gusto mong gawin sa buhay mo, it's your dream. Your goal. Your fuel. Your motivation!"

It took me weeks para ma utelize ko yung mga possible technical knowledge na pwd maging importante habang nag sisimula. Pero I ended up na parang diko na tuloy alam kung anu na ba dapat ko unahin.

  6. That's what I need, activity management. I have a full-time job now, applied at onlinejobs.ph and was hired last January. But I'm not satisfied with the rate. Nasasayangan ako sa time kasi there are times na wala magawa. It's a transcription job, unahan sa menu especially sa gabi. So I'm requesting now to change from full-time to part-time. I just joined here 2 days ago and I'm grateful na merong ganitong group.

  7. "You have to step up. Be realistic. - Ellea
