“You don’t hire for skills, you hire for attitude. You can always teach skills.” - Simon Sinek
So I guess, the question we all need to be asking is, what skills can I add to my profile so I can attract employers and clients?
Tech skills are great, especially if you are an online freelancer. If you know how computers and the internet work, you can start with that. Basic stuff like word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation also essential. Eventually, you can level up and learning digital marketing fundamentals before you decide to niche down on one particular skill.
But there are certain skills that you can also learn to help you thrive in any work environment. Whether you are still working in the corporate world or managing your own freelancing business, these skills will prove valuable:
1. Communication
Comm skills are very important, especially writing. The digital age has transformed how businesses communicate with consumers, vendors, and partners. What should written business communication look like? It must be professional, clear and concise. Good thing, this skill is something you can learn. Become a master communicator and you will see your career grow in no time.
2. Adaptability
Change is the only constant thing in the world, including the workplace. When a worker can be flexible and have the ability to adapt to changing work conditions, he or she can be an asset to the client/company. What does it mean to be adaptable and how can you develop this trait?
3. Problem Solving
Another marketable skill that is really nice to have is problem-solving. The way you see the world and observe what's happening around you is crucial if you want to make an impact. Successful people know how to identify and understand problems when they arise (or even before they do). Not only that, they are also good at attacking the problem with both traditional and out-of-the-box methods. If you consider yourself a good problem solver, cheer up! That's something your potential client would love to hear about you!
