She's a 40-year old gal who resigned from her corporate job after almost 12 long years in a Manpower Agency.

"Nung nag-resign po ako sa dating work ko last August 2020, As in I have no plans on what to do next. But I started na, magbenta ng Dried Fish online para kahit papaano magkaroon pa din ng income continuously and may bestfriend na nasa Japan offered me na magbenta din ng Japanese products online."

Luckily, she came to know about freelancing.

And she did everything to learn this new found career.

"I will prove to everyone na hindi mali yung naging decision ko na mag-resign at this age and at the same time yong iniwan ko yung position ko sa company."

       Fast forward today.

She's earning more than what she gets in the corporate.

       Boom!

  1. Introduction

Tere worked as an account manager in a manpower agency for 12 years. She wanted a new career path and to grow individually so she decided to resign. She managed an online business first before landing as a freelancer. Through the help of VABootcamp and her determination to reach her goal, she finally got a client and enjoyed the perks of being a freelancer.

  • Kung baga atras ka isang beses, rest, hinga. Umiyak ka pero kinabukasan you have to make two steps forward. Atleast lamang ka parin ng isa.
  • Tulungan mo pa rin ang sarili mo na you have to get up in the morning. Labanan mo yung nararamdaman mo.Tapos kailangan mo ring paniwalain sa sarili mo na kaya mo to kasi meron akong gustong makuha. Kailangan ma reach ko yun.
  • Kailangan natin ng mag-aral ng mag-aral. Continues learnings talaga siya. Kailangan e ready mo din yung sarili mo sa challenges, heartaches, disappointments and yung feeling mo na hindi ka fit to do the job. Labanan mo ang lahat ng mga yun. Never stop learning kasi key yun eh.
  • So freelancing bago yan sayo . Nakakatakot pero take a risk. Malay mo yun ang magpapaganda ng buhay mo diba? 

III. Journey to Freelancing                                                                                                         

  • Tere was handling multiple clients for 12 years and was still confused about whether she wanted her career path. She wanted new learning. Grow herself outside of her comfort zone that is why she decided to resign.
  • She started selling dried fish from Palawan. Her friend also from Japan became her business partner in selling Japanese products through online. Then she established it in Shopee and Lazada.
  • After finding Social Media Management she thought that she needed those to guide her in online business.
  • As her group on Facebook became wide, she found a live webinar by sir Jason Dulay. Because of her curiosity, After that, she enrolled herself in an accelerated package.
  • She had confusion and what if’s. Is freelancing for her? She never gives up on learning.
  • She started at zero with no knowledge about freelancing but she has mentors that guide her.
  • She studied until she got into an internship which she experienced having a client. After that, she doubts herself again if she can pursue this type of job. She can manage her time but she’s afraid to be fail. She motivated herself that as she aged, she should have new learnings.
  • Tere got confused again about the opportunity of her career but she asked for some sign because for her she wanted to become a freelancer.
  • After discovering the advantages as a freelancer, she pursued freelancing and worked hard for it. There were times that she got nervous and afraid of some clients because she’s not good at English. Since she has the dedication to the job, challenges and disappointment is not a hindrance, she studied and made a way to improve herself.
  • Tere got more clients and made her rate double up because of hard work. She believes that when she excels, the more clients she gets.
  • She doesn't want to go back to her old self where she came to work late and went home late. She wants to work from home especially during this pandemic. She wanted her work routine to be much easier and comfortable than doing freelancing.
  • Being a freelancer, she manages her time doing both online business and freelancing because as of now she cannot give up one of these jobs. She knew that for now, she can handle both.
  • So, freelancing made her grow individually, meet new people and widen her knowledge at the same time make her life easier.
  1. Question and Answer

You are already in a good situation. Dumating yung time na nagtanong ka. Is this for me?  Meron pa bang iba diyan para sa akin?  I'm very much wondering about that. What made you think that? What made you desire that? 

Siguro po dahil routine kasi yung work, so kahit na sabihin nyo po na privilege ka to travel, ayoko na siya ulit gawin for another 10 years. Gusto ko naman po na parang  yung chance na tulad nyan nasa bahay ka na lang nagtatrabaho lalo na ngayon na pandemic, mas safe siya so parang yung pagod mo sa travel, kasi before po 2 hours ang biyahe ko. 2 hours a day ang binabyahe ko para makarating ka lang sa opisina because of the traffic. Tapos sa gabi, minsan po maraming trabaho, as in inaabot ako ng late, super late na sa office tapos makikipaghabulan ka na ng sakay para lang makauwi. Lalo na pag umuulan mahirap sumakay. Eh ang payat payat ko pa. So, sabi ko paano na ako tataba kung laging ganito. Sabi ko lagi akong nakikipag habulan ng sasakyan para makauwi. Pagdating ko matutulog nlng ako tapos babangon ka ulit ng maaga para makapasok ka.  So ayoko ng balikan yung ganun, kasi isa po yun sa naging consideration nung naging half hearted ako ng freelancing to corporate na parang sabi ko ayoko na yata ng bumiyahe lalo na ngayon pandemic. So sabi ko ayoko naman pong lalabas nga ako ng may work pero mag uuwi ako ng sakit. Yung ganun. Ako pa ang nag cause ng problema sa pamilya ko.

 

 I am glad that you mention that. Imagine, moderator ka na, It means to say, marami ka ng natapos, marami ka ng napagdaanan. Kunting yapak nalang, full pledge freelancer kana  and yet half hearted ka. Nag isip ka parin na ano kaya? Balik pa rin kaya ako dito or am I going to pursue this. Why?

 

Siguro po kasi parang nakita ko po yung mas malaki yung kita pa din. So sabi ko dollar dollar. Sabi ko may ganito pala? Kung alam ko lang na dati pa na meron palang ganitong freelancing, eh sana noon ko pa sya pinursue. Siguro expert na ako ngayon noh? sir Phenix kagaya mo. So sabi ko ito na yung next level na nung career path ko na parang  titingnan ko hanggang saang part na kakayanin ko na, alam mo yun sa life span na baka meron pang iba na pwede pang magawa na parang the more you age, nag e inquire ka parin ng experience na habang nagkaka edad ka your learning, your meeting different people. At the same time parang kumikita ka ng maganda, tapos yung kita mo pausbong ng pausbong kasi the more na maging expert ka dun lumalaki yung rates. Dun dumudoble na kung baga parang dati po sa work parang nag e increase kayo, magkano lang? Parang ito ang work mo, tapos the more na tumataas ang posisyon mo, dumadami ang responsibilities, dumadami ang workload pero ang limit ng salary mo konti lang. Hindi katulad sa freelancing, the more you excel, the more na nag a upskill ka don tumataas ang rate mo. So yung skills mo talaga ang magpapayaman. So sabi ko baka pwede naman akong yumaman after 10 years.

 

May curiosity lang ako. Was there anything negative in your freelancing experiences that made you think na balik kaya ako sa corporate nalang? 

 

Siguro po yung parang syempre di naman ako sanay na nag e english, so isa yun! so parang sabi ko di ko yata kaya na makipag usap sa kliyente ko ng matagal kasi baka duguin na akot lahat lahat hindi niya pa rin maintindihan. Tapos minsan bago yung tasks, parang feeling mo hindi mo kayang gawin yung tasks pero wala, kailangan mong kayanin. Kailangang gawan mo ng paraan para malaman mo yung tasks kung paano mo sya gagawin. There's no backing out pagdating sa freelancing kasi ikaw na mismo. Self credibility na yung ihaharap dun sa client. Siguro po minsan may limiting beliefs na parang hindi kaya , kahit nag aral na ako, hindi ko yata kaya. Hanggang ngayon din naman po Sir Phenix, pag sa morning bigla ko na lang yan..Shocks! hindi ko yata kaya ang magiging tasks ko today. Yung ganun pero surprisingly natatapos ko naman po siya. So far, ginawa ko naman po ng maayos. Minsan lang talaga parang feeling mo lang downer na parang di mo kaya. Nakakalungkot, ganyan. Minsan sabi ko nga parang nag o over think lang ako kasi kaya mo naman kung tutuusin. So, ngayon po, ay hindi na ako babalik ng corporate, Freelancing na po talaga! 

 

Nag aral ka, and then nag intern ka ng nag intern. Ano bang meron sa internship at bakit parang ano,-- kinuha mo ata lahat? 

 

Kasi po sir Phenix, diba po wala. I started from zero, so sabi ko at least man lang meron talaga akong experience pag nagkaroon na ako ng kliyente lalo na yung Social Media Management po kasi yung pinu pursue ko na gagawin. So sabi ko since mayroong offer si VABootcamp naman na internship, ga grab ko na yung opportunity to learn kasi chance ko na yun and at the same time gusto ko din yung halimbawa may nakikita po akong mga comments na nagtatanong about freelancing, gusto ko silang sagutin--kung paano ko na experience, kung ano yung na experience ko--yun yung gusto kong ishare ko talaga sa kanila kasi member din ako ng ibang group. Mahilig ako magbasa ng mga comments, so parang nakiita ko don--minsan hindi sila nasasagot ng mabuti so sabi ko ayoko may makaranas don na mga bago kasi syempre kaya ka nga nagtatanong kasi wala kang alam. Kung ano ang kaya kung sagutin, sasagutin ko. Sobrang active po ng student group. Yun din naman ang vibe kay VABootcamp, na super friendly, approachable yung mga coaches pwede mong tanungin anytime at the same time talagang marami kang matututunan sa internship. Madedevelop mo yung skills mo at pakikisama. And as a VABootcamp student isa yun sa mga dapat e ga grab kasi hindi po naman lahat ng groups nag o offer ng ganun.

 

Did it help you? All of these internships that you have, did it help you in your career?

 

Opo! Nakatulong  po talaga lalo na po yung Content Creation. Yun na po yung ini offer ko na service ngayon--yung Social Media Management. So yung natutunan ko po dun sa Content Creation na internship, naa-apply ko po talaga siya.

 

Sabi ni Jeelene, may balak ka pa ba na bumalik sa pag o online selling?

 

Yun yung Japan products po, naka up pa naman po siya hanggang ngayon. Nasa Lazada and Shoppe po. So kung may nakikita po kayo sa feed ko na Japan products, sa amin po yun. Yun din po ang naging parang practice ground ko.

 

Question from Elena. Yung pagiging online seller nyo gamit nyo paba niche nyo today?  

 

  Yes! As in gamit na gamit po siya kasi online selling social media yan. Exposure mo yan sa social media.  Actually diyan ako natutong gumamit ng Scheduling tool, kung paano ko na explore si facebook--kung paano mag facebook ads, mag google ads , mag build ng shop inside facebook, gumawa ng content, gumawa ng caption, graphics. Lahat yan na apply ko sa freelancing. Yun yung naging training ground ko aside sa mga internship.

 

There's a comment here about being inspired by you. Here's a comment from James. Thanks for the inspiration, Ms. Tere. I'm 36 at bagong enroll pa po. Sobrang mahiyain daw. Tere, were you shy back then? I don't think so. Feeling ko di ka naman mahiyain.

 

 Hindi ko po masasabi kasi nga po expose ako before sa client servicing. So isa yun sa mga tinanggal ko pero introvert ako kasi minsan gusto ko ako lang--ganyan--lalo na kapag pagod ako. Ayoko ng may ibang tao . For freelancing, kelangan mo siyang e enhance yung shyness kasi pag humarap ka kay client isa yun sa titingnan nila yung confidence level mo. Of course, e soshow mo yung sarili mo. Ibebenta mo kasi yung sarili mo dyan--so kailangan ma convince mo si client na you can do the work. Usually Sir Phenix yung mga client hindi naghahanap ng super expert. Minsan titingnan lang nila kung fit kayo, vibe ka niya. Gusto niya yung aura mo--isa yun sa mga kinu consider ng client. Kung mahiyain ka po, kailangan mo siyang praktisin. Hindi naman yung sobrang mahangin ng todo todo. Kailangan lang makita ni client na totoo yung mga sinasabi mo. You can do the work. You can assure them na magiging trustworthy ka kasi at the end of the day pag na gain mo na ang trust ni client, hindi na yan maghahanap ng iba yan. Ikaw nalang ang hahanapin so kelangan confident ka na kaya mo yung trabaho.

 

 Lahat naman siguro ng freelancers dumaan sa rejections. With those kinds of disappointments in your journey as a freelancer. How you were able to cope up with that? 

 

 Parang ini-endure ko siya the whole day. Tapos meron akong araw na parang nanamnamin ko yung sakit, yung disappointments. Iisipin ko yan maghapon ang weird nga po--tapos kailangan bukas ng umaga tapos na ako ng emotion na to. Kailangan maka move pass na ako dito kasi kung hindi bukas ganito na naman ako. So paano na yung biggest WHY ko? kung kaya nga ako nag freelancing--kung mismong yung isip ko nagsasabi sa akin na hindi mo kaya, hindi mo kaya? Ano nalang ang kakayanin mo? Kung ang isip mo mismo hindi mo kakalabanin. You have to give a one step forward parin lagi. Akala ko ba gusto ko ng ganito. Akala ko ba gusto mo ng ganyan? Oh, paano mo yun ma aachieve kung ikaw mismo sinasabi mo--Ayoko na, Hindi ko na kaya. OK--San ka babagsak? San ka mapupunta? Paano yung biggest WHY? Paano yung iba mo pang gustong gawin?  Kailangan lang po na you have to move forward. Kung baga atras ka isang beses, rest, hinga. Umiyak ka pero bukas you have to make two steps forward. Atleast lamang ka parin ng isa. Parang chacha, umaabante ka parin kahit pa kunti kunti. And sa freelancing, hindi ka mawawalan ng challenges--nandiyan yan. Unang una foreign clients yung kausap mo and hindi ka sahuran ng palugi. Pangalawa dollar yung rate mo. Tulungan mo pa rin ang sarili mo na you have to get up in the morning.Labanan mo yung nararamdaman mo. Tapos kailangan mo ring paniwalaan mo yung sarili na kaya mo to, kasi meron akong gustong makuha, kailangan ma reach ko yun. 

 

 I love that moment that you showed. Ibig sabihin ba pinapagalitan mo sarili mo?

 

Opo! Naku, lalo na pag nagtatrabaho ako. Ano ba yan? ang pangit naman ng design mo.May ganung moment po ako tas parang--Oh sige na magpapahinga muna ako saglit kasi parang minsan na buburn out kana eh, lalo na po pag gumawa ka ng graphics minsan yung creative juices mo--wala talaga--so parang teka nga iinom muna ako tubig kasi wala talaga eh pero babalik at babalik ka pa rin don sa upuan para matapos mo yun kasi kailangan mo siyang tapusin.

 

 Supportive ba ang family mo sa mga desisyong ginawa mo? You know nag quit ka sa corporate, nag-aral ka sa freelancing and nag intern ka. Some of them are unpaid internships as well. Were there supporters of your decisions?

 

 Opo--supportive naman. Meron lang yung nag resign lang ako. Medyo na question lang ako ng mother ko kasi parang sabi niya-- Ano ang gagawin mo? Bakit ka nag resign? Sabi ko, kaya ko naman to. Alam ko kaya ko to and hindi naman ako basta basta susuko. Siyempre iniwan ko nga po yung maganda kung trabaho tapos hindi ko rin naman po pababayaan ang mga responsibilities ko. Hanggang ngayon sinasabi ko sa kanila na--Naku mag freelance nalang kayo kasi mostly ng mga pinsan ko nasa call center eh. So sabi ko sige stepping stone niyo na yan tapos next niyo na din yung freelancing. Ok naman po so far--and nakikita naman kasi nila na I'm doing well kahit papano--kahit na hindi pa six figure earner pero, soon magkaroon din nga agency. We will see!

 

 How many months or years have you started from enrolling in freelancing to now?

 

November po ako nag start mag aral and then February po ako nakakuha ng unang client pero April  po talaga nag start yung continues na yung kliyente. So may gap po talaga siya. 

 

 Multiple clients ka ba ngayon? How many clients do you have now?

 

Meron po akong apat pero I'm planning to give up po yung isa kasi medyo natatali po ako sa oras kasi syempre kaya nga ako nag freelancing kasi ayaw ko na yung nakaupo ako ng five hours tapos yun lang yung ginagawa.

 

Are you happy where you are? 

 

Super! kasi yung sub clients ko 2 hours lang ako nagtatrabaho tapos parang malaki pa yung sahod ko. Yung kinikita ko ngayon, pangarap ko lang before. Tapos ngayon ilang months lang ako nag start sa freelancing na achieve ko na siya. Samantalang dati, mai-increase-san lang ako ng one thousand masaya na ako. Mabigyan na ako ng bonus masaya na ako pero ngayon parang pano pa po pag nag full time ako na naghapit talaga ako na maghanap ng iba pang kliyente. Ano pa po kaya? Yung pinapangarap ko na income monthly baka kaya ko na. Yan po ang pinaghahandaan ko recently.

 

Kung papipiliin ka, online seller o freelancing? Which would you choose?

 

Both! kasi parehong may income. So as much as possible, hold mo yung dalawa kasi sayang naman kung e give up mo yung isa. Kung kaya mo e keep mo lang pareho. Kung kaya mo lang ang time. Sa ngayon po, kaya ko pa naman silang pagsabayin. 

 

May factor po ba kadalasan ang pagiging native speaker para mahire ka ng client?

 

Actually hindi, kasi dati sobrang conscious ako pagka nag english kasi hindi nga naman ako sanay na nagsasalita ng English eh. As in talagang barok kung barok--pero dati may kasamang nerbyos siya at nara-rattle ako. Nagkakaroon talaga ako ng blackout moment pag nakakausap si client pero recently itong isa ko pong kliyente pinagtatawag nya ako--so doon ako na-train na parang Ok lang yan na kahit hindi fluent yung English mo, ang importante naiintidihan ka nila, nagkakaintindihan kayo. Well, hindi mo maiaalis kasi tayong mga Filipino, nasanay tayo na pagka nakarinig tayo ng wrong grammar pinagtatawanan, kino correct. Isa yun sa mga fears natin kasi fear ko din iyon hanggang ngayon. Hindi ka naman e descrimanate na hindi mo kaya yung trabaho dahil lang sa hindi fluent yung English mo. So, ok lang po na kahit hindi ka native speaker basta nagkakaintindihan kayo at ginagawa mo yung tasks.

 

Ano ba ang pwede mo ma eshare sa mga kasama natin dito, mga viewers natin, that you think is the most important that you could give them?

 

Pag pumasok po tayo sa freelancing, kailangan e ready natin yung sarili natin. Kailangan natin ng maraming aral. Kailangan natin ng mag-aral ng mag-aral. Continues learnings talaga siya. Kailangan e ready mo din yung sarili mo sa challenges, heartaches, disappointments and yung feeling mo na hindi ka fit to do the job. Labanan mo ang lahat ng mga yun. Never stop learning kasi key yun eh. Kahit na sabihin mong may client ka ngayon, kailangan mag aaral ka parin kasi yung learning naman it's for you. Wala naman pong ibang mag bebenefit kundi ikaw din. Part yun ng self love, kasi hindi mo ini istock yung sarili mo sa mga bagay na pwde mo pang pag aralan na kahit na sabihin mo ng may edad ka na. Hindi yun hindrance na mag aral ka. Kahit na mahirap, bago sa atin, nakakatakot pero kung feeling mo magagamit mo naman yung learnings na yun sa ikauunlad ng buhay mo. WHY NOT? Pursue lang! Go lang! Laban lang! Kailangan po mag invest tayo sa sarili natin. Kailangan mong mag Upskill kasi pag mag Upskill ka, don ka po maging expert. Kailangan din natin e explore minsan kung ano ang kaya nating gawin.

Wag tayong mag give up sa challenges. We have to be stronger lalo na pag feeling natin aayawan na tayo ng kliyente ng bigla. Of course, kailangan din natin ng guidance kay Lord kasi minsan siya naman ang magsasabi sa tin kung para saan talaga tayong path dapat pero hindi mo rin kasi malalaman kung hindi mo din ita try. So, freelancing bago yan sayo--nakakatakot pero take the risk kasi malay mo yun ang magpapaganda sa buhay mo diba?
