Meet Connie.

She got tired of the corporate setting.

Well, who wouldn’t?

She stayed with one company for two years.

And she was laid off from two of her jobs — something she’s not happy about.

Her four-hour daily commute made her stressed.

Something she never wanted to experience ever again.

Good thing she discovered freelancing.

Fast forward to today.

She’s now enjoying time freedom.

No amount of money can buy that.

Be inspired and moved by Connie’s freelancing journey.

Notable quotes

  • Kahit anong market, mag decide ka lang then do the work hindi kailangan mag intay ka pa. Hiramin ko yung tagline ni Nike, "Just do it".
  • Nong baby tayo wala naman tayong alam, ngayon marunong tayong mag comment sa live streaming na ito, ngayon may facebook account kayo, which is hindi natin alam 20 years ago. Wag matakot!
  • There is no competition, only collaboration.
  • Hindi tayo nag iisa, nandiyan si Lord. Yung mga overthinking overthinking, i dasal nyo nalang.
  • Practice rejection, i reach mo yung hindi kana naaapektuhan.

Connie Zabala's Journey to Freelancing

  • Connie Zabala has been working in the corporate world for 10 years and jumping from one corporate job to another.
    • manufacturing, hotel, and call center
  • Got the idea of becoming a VA because she is a subscriber of Brother Bo Sanchez who used to work with her first mentor Jomar.
  • She attended a face-to-face VA seminar but didn't pursue a freelance job because she used to work in a corporation for 10 years until she experienced being laid off.
    • The first laid off is from her manufacturing company and the second from her BPO company.
  • After her experience, she tried to apply what she learned from her seminar and mentor.
  • She tried applying for a job that she saw on a Facebook group and it became her first online job.
  • Her goal is to work from home regardless of the schedule.
  • She worked for two years with her first client. After that, she decided to leave. She realized that it is possible to have a flexible schedule as long as it has 8 hours a day.
  • She started in 2011 and considered herself retired from corporate work. She stayed focused on her freelancing career because of the stress from commuting, and office politics.
  • She started to focus on Youtube because there are a lot of people asking her how she started her freelancing career, so she decided to make a video.

Q&A Highlights

Since nag vi-video edit ka was it an easy transition to focus sa pag You-Youtube?

Guest Q: anong tools ang ginagamit mo for video editing?

Nag record kami. Tinanong ko sila, ano gusto niyo sabihin? Ako nag collate lahat, ako yung nag edit, from there nag-enjoy ako nang pag eedit dun nag start. Hitfilm express ang gamit ko nuon. nag upgrade ako to desktop.

Conny how long did it take for you to have enough skills para masabi mo na I can edit videos?

Pagdating sa video editing parang swimming, kailangan actual yung experience mo. Pwede kang mag start mag-edit ng sarili mo lang, hindi mo kailangan i publish, for example if my gusto kang video na gayahin that's the way how to practice then pwede mong gawing sample in the future. Mas madali syang matutununan pag ginagawa mo talaga.

How to select your target market?

Self development yan for me.

Paano mo na approach itong target market mo?

Una is research, tatanungin mo ano yung need nila, yung common problems nila, pagdating sa business nila online, meron din naman nag iistart na wala ring idea, it's always ok to approach them. Tanungin mo lang if my channel sila ano yung pinaka struggle mo pagdating sa pag upload ng youtube, my website ka na ba? wala pa, bakit wala pa? Pwede ka rin mag search sa google then after pwede ka ng makipag connect, like LinkedIn. Kailangan research talaga.

How did you win this contract from big time target markets, when you have some tough competition?

For me, may specific freelancer, to specific client.

Since you are dealing with big time youtubers, how do you negotiate your fee with them?

Magkano iyon, then plus yung lifestyle natin, savings, yun yung minimum rate natin. Second, alamin mo yung business ni client. Have a call with them.

Have as many discovery calls as you can. Practice.

How can people connect with you?

You can also check my book, you can also visit conniezabala.com/vabook, or conniezabala.com

Is there a stretched out life lesson that you've learned in freelancing that you want to share with our audiences?
